JAMES Roberts says his wonder goal against Plymouth Argyle will be one to savour for quite some time after claiming a vital win for Oxford United in spectacular fashion.

The 18-year-old curled a sublime shot into the top corner of the net from 20 yards seven minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win in front of a big crowd at Home Park.

It was just the response the U’s needed after being outclassed 2-0 by Shrewsbury Town at home on Boxing Day.

And Roberts, who burst on to the scene with a brace against Grimsby Town last month, admitted his fourth goal for the club would take some beating.

He said: “That’s probably going to be the highlight for a long time.

Latest United news:

“After losing to Shrewsbury on Friday we knew we had to bounce back, and to get the winner was better than I could have ever expected.

“I thought ‘I did it at Grimsby, so I can do it again’ and I cut inside and hoped.

“I do it in training quite a lot and to do it in a match in front of 11,000 people was really rewarding.”

It looked a perfect effort, but Roberts, who was suffering with cramp, had his doubts.

He said: “I thought the keeper was going to get it, the ball would hit the post and then we’ll miss the rebound.

“I’m always a pessimist, but seeing it nestle in the corner was one of the best feelings I’ve had in a long time.”

Plymouth played with ten men for almost an hour, but they led through Lewis Alessandra’s opener until midway through the second half.

United’s equaliser came thanks to an unorthodox finish from substitute John Campbell, who was delighted to score his maiden goal for United with his first touch of the game.

He said: “When I was getting ready (head coach Michael Appleton) just said to me ‘go and get us a goal’ and I didn’t expect us to get one as quick as I did.

“I just got between two defenders and stuck my belly out if I’m honest and it went in.”

Appleton was pleased with the way his side had waited for their openings as Plymouth tired.

He said: “I think our discipline in the end probably won us the game.

“We had to be very patient, that’s the one thing we said at half-time, we knew that with them being down to ten men we were going to get a few opportunities.

“John read the situation well for the equaliser and what can you say about the second goal?

“It was fantastic from a very good young footballer.”
