SHOPPERS have been urged to use a temporary car park if Oxford’s Westgate centre fills up today after high demand yesterday.

Oxford City Council said drivers should use a car park in Oxpens, set up for when the main multi-storey closes on January 5 for a two-year upgrade of the centre.

Demand was heaviest by 1.30pm when 90 per cent of its 1,124 spaces were full, said council spokesman Chofamba Sithole. The council warned all spaces could be full by 2.30pm.

Mr Sithole said: “The car park was very close to reaching its capacity yesterday and we expect it to be very busy today.”

No more than 30 cars were parked at the 390-space Oxpens site, next to Oxford Ice Rink, yesterday.
