A 99-SPACE extension to an Abingdon leisure centre car park has been completed as part of a £390,000 revamp.

The number of spaces at White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre is being increased by 40 per cent from 244 to 343 and landscaping for the new car park will be carried out in the next month.

Vale of White Horse District Council, which owns the centre, said it wanted to make the car park easier and safer to navigate for its 700,000 annual visitors.

Cabinet member for leisure Elaine Ware said: “I’m sure centre users will be very pleased that this work has been carried out.

“The overflow area has made it much easier to find a parking space and helps to ensure that nearby roads are no longer clogged up.”

Work on the new overflow area, next to the skate park, began in August.

Once that was opened, improvements were also made to the existing car park.

They included work to replace block paving with a more durable surface, improving the alignment and markings of parking bays, creating five more disabled parking spaces and new signs.
