A GENERATING module that was damaged in a major blaze at Didcot B power station has come back online as its owner faces a repair bill of millions of pounds.

Energy firm RWE npower yesterday said Module 5 was back to half-capacity after repair work following the fire on Sunday, October 19.

No other sections of the station were affected and Module 6 – the other generating module – continued to operate at full capacity.

The power station’s full capacity is 1.4 Gigawatts, although it is understood it is unlikely to return to those levels in the immediate future.

The head of coal and gas at parent company RWE Generation, Roger Miesen, said: “It’s good news that Module 5 is back online so quickly.

“Didcot B has an important part to play in contributing to the UK’s security of supply and it will be available to generate power this winter. Essential repairs will be in the region of single-digit millions of pounds.

“Our thanks go out for the fantastic response and dedication of the emergency services who worked alongside RWE teams to bring the fire under control quickly and safely.

“Huge credit is also due to the engineering teams, who were able to bring Module 5 back into service after only nine days.”
