Danny Rose is targeting a move into mid-table today as Oxford United visit Carlisle United in search of a third win in eight days.

A week ago the U’s were second bottom in Sky Bet League Two, but victories over Tranmere Rovers and Northampton Town have transformed the mood.

Their slow start means they have not been out of the bottom six all season, but Michael Appleton’s men could make a big leap with victory at Brunton Park this afternoon.

No fewer than seven teams are within three points of United and Rose is eager to keep climbing.

The 26-year-old midfielder said: “The gaffer spoke to us before the game last Saturday about having three games so quickly and it being a great opportunity to turn an average week into a great one.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good position to do that.

“There are a few teams that are within a couple of points of us, so if we get a result at Carlisle and they don’t, then we will be well in mid-table and looking up, rather than over our shoulders.”

United have not won three successive league fixtures since the opening games of last season – and it is almost two years since they racked up nine points in the space of a week.

Rose thinks the last few days have given the side momentum for the first time this season, which should help them start in the right manner this afternoon.

He said: “We always have to try and start the game as quickly and aggressively as possible.

“I think it gives you that added incentive and more confidence to do that and believe in yourself.”

He added: “I think it’s probably before this time last year that we last did something like this, but I think all season long we’ve been on the fringes of getting results like these.

“We’ve managed to be that bit tougher to beat all over the pitch and I think that’s been the difference in us turning results around.”

With a round trip of 540 miles, this is the longest journey of United’s league campaign.

But while some players will not be relishing a visit to Cumbria, others can see the benefits.

Rose said: “Personally I look forward to it – with three kids at home it’s almost unique to get a really good night’s sleep.

“Some don’t enjoy the journey, but for me it’s a time to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of family life and really concentrate on the job in hand.”
