COFFEE shops across the city embraced International Coffee Day, a celebration of the much-loved beverage, with the focus very much on Fairtrade.

Staff at Java & Co in George Street were among those to spread the message to their customers on Monday.

Owner Andrew Bowen said: “The whole purpose of the day was to raise awareness that farmers should get a fair price for their coffee.”

In February the Oxford celebrated its 10th anniversary of becoming a Fairtrade city. Sebastian Blake, chairman of Oxfordshire Fairtrade Coaltion, said: “All moves to promote fairtrade globally are welcome, Oxford has always been a leader in this area.”
