A GREEN councillor has said more can be done despite the city council scooping an energy award this month.
Oxford City Council topped the Local Authority Partnerships category during the National Community Energy Awards at Oxford Town Hall on September 4. The award recognises local authorities committed to helping community energy organisations.
Deputy leader of the Green Group Craig Simmons said: “The council cannot afford to rest on its laurels as it continues to struggle to meet its own carbon reduction targets and is making only meagre investments in new low carbon energy.
“It is also failing to enforce planning conditions to require renewable energy on new buildings. Why, for example, don’t we have solar panels on the roof of the Town Hall or solar canopies on the Park & Ride car parks?”
Board member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford John Tanner said: “By helping to set up the Low Carbon Hub and accessing major funding streams to implement large scale renewable energy projects, the city council is really playing a major role in making community energy a reality.”
