Oxfordshire commuters face rail price increase

First published in News

OXFORDSHIRE commuters are set to pay more for train tickets after rail operators discovered how much they could increase rail prices today.

The average train fare in England is set to go up by 3.5 per cent in the new year.

Under the Government’s formula, operators can increase regulated rail fares in England by July's measure of inflation, plus 1 per cent.

The Retail Prices Index was 2.5 per cent last month, according to the Office for National Statistics.

For Oxford’s commuters this means a season ticket from Oxford to London Paddington could go up by £163.52, and would then cost £4,835.

Bicester to Marylebone is just as bad. It's an absolute joke. The price from Bicester to Birmingham is £3400 a year unyet to London including tube is £5400 (£4600 without tube). This doesn't take into account parking each day either.

Unless you are in the £100k region of wages, no company is going to pay that on top of your wages per year to cover the cost of transport.

Driving a similar distance (not to London) costs around £3000 a year including maintenance, servicing, MOT, tax, etc. Even if I was commuting to London, I'd still need a car so I would have some of that cost as well as the rail fair.

Rail travel is an absolute extortion racket. The trains are substandard. They are over crowded at peak hours and slow. They are forever having problems on the line or breaking down.

I'm so glad I don't commute to London any more.
