SEVEN-year-old Mya Harris had an operation on her right hip at Oxford Children’s Hospital in January.
It was the latest in a series of operations for Mya who has spina bifida, and was a success.
Her father Dale Harris, 28, of Normandy Crescent, Cowley, said his daughter’s condition meant she had to spend part of the day in a wheelchair but tried to lead a normal life.
The father-of-two, who also has a five-year-old son called Haydon, said he appreciated the support of staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and at the children’s hospital, who have cared for Mya since she was born.
To show his appreciation, he is getting ready to train for next year’s OX5 Run at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, on Sunday, April 18.
This year, organisers hope 1,000 runners will take part to help them raise more than £65,000 for toys and equipment at the children’s hospital, which opened in 2007.
Mr Harris, who works for Elmer Cotton sports shop in Turl Street, Oxford, said: “Mya has a wheelchair and tries to be as independent as possible, but her lower legs get very tired. She has had numerous operations on her legs, including the one on her right hip in January, which has helped to line up her body.
“In the past, we had to visit four different hospitals, but now the children’s services are all under one roof.
“The OX5 Run is gaining a great reputation and I think organisers have every chance of getting over 1,000 runners this year.
“I would urge people to sign up for the race as soon as possible because then they can start to plan their training programme and get as many sponsors as possible.”
Children’s hospital spokesman Sarah Vaccari said: “We are so lucky to have wonderful supporters like Dale who take every opportunity to get involved with our fundraising.
“As Dale well knows, the facilities and equipment at the children’s hospital really are first rate – and so much of that is due to the support of our local community.”
The OX5 started in 2002.
Last year, Tory leader and Witney MP David Cameron got the race under way before taking part. He was one of more than 800 runners who raised £57,000.
For the second year running the race is being sponsored by recruitment consultants Allen Associates and Motorworld.
