TWO mums whose sons have battled cancer for months on end have signed up to raise money now their boys are on the mend.

Brave youngsters Zac Durkin, seven, and Finlay White, 11, were both diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and still regularly visit Oxford Children’s Hospital.

Mums Tabitha Durkin and Suzanne White have formed a team to once again run the Oxford Mail’s OX5 Run to raise money and say thank you.

Zac Durkin was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2013 when he was five.

He has endured more than two years of chemotherapy and will continue treatment until September, but his mum said things were looking up.

Mrs Durkin said: “He’s doing really well. His hair has grown back and he looks like any other child his age.

“We still have to go to the hospital now and again but he’s much stronger and is even playing cricket and going to beavers.”

The full-time mum has taken many trips to the Oxford Children’s Hospital over the past few years along with her husband Liam and their five-year-old twins Bea and Elsbeth.

The 38-year-old said the hospital made things easier for the whole family.

She said: “The staff at the hospital are just amazing. The playrooms – which some of the OX5 money goes towards – are brilliant, they have everything from Xboxes to Playdough and board games.”

Finlay was diagnosed with bone cancer in August 2013. He then had a year of chemotherapy and now, after two operations on his leg, is fit and well.

Mrs White, who will be running in April with her husband Keiron said it was important to keep raising money for the hospital.

She said: “We still receive help and support from there and visit the hospital every three months for a check up.

“Finlay is still in remission and had an operation in July last year to straighten his leg.

“The support is still great and its such a worthwhile cause.”

The mother-of-two, of Sherbourne Road, Witney, said that Finlay’s successful operation had made it easier for him to walk, run and swim.

The 42-year-old praised the nurses and doctors at the children’s hospital for their continued help.

She said: “They are very kind and they really help to explain things to Finlay, which were often scary.

“He really doesn’t mind going up to the John Radcliffe and that makes things a lot easier.”

After running the Blenheim Palace five-mile run in 2014 the payroll consultant missed last year’s event as she gave birth to the couple’s second child Florence just two days later.

She will once again be running alongside her husband to raise money this year.

She said: “It’s a really enjoyable day at Blenheim and the venue is beautiful. We will have a team running and try to raise as much money as possible for what is a really great cause.”

The OX5 Run is being sponsored by recruitment firm Allen Associates for the eighth year.

Last year’s event raised £106,000 for the hospital and the run, now in its fourteenth year, has chalked up more than £850,000.

The money is used to fund medical equipment and other aspects of children’s care, such as play specialists, nurses and toys and games.
