Oxford Fashion Week held its Lingerie and Swimsuit show last night at Malmaison. Scantilly clad fit young women and men marched up and down a make shift catwalk in the Champagne Bar on the 3rd floor. The well dressed, good looking populace watched, smiling, nodding their head and letting out a few whoops (boys only) when the more risque outfits were on parade. This night seemed even more popular than the one before at Freud's, especially when the models came out to talk to the guests, before putting their street clothes back on. Of course it could have just been the atmosphere and more intimate venue. The producers of the show created a great mood between clubbing and burlesque making everyone think that they were watching something naughty, a bit sinful. This might explain the amount of sweets they had on offer for nibbles. Towers of donuts, plates of cupcakes and what must have been the entire holdings of the restaurants pudding cart were passed around. Being surrounded by the pert models quenched my desire for dessert and had me craving a bit of celery. The aperitif before the show was sparkling with grenadine or kirsch. I liked the bubbles, but again it was a bit sweet for my palate. I would rather had a simple glass of Veuve Cliquot, but I understand the trendiness of the pink potion. Carl Anglim and his team have successfully organized an event that has drawn crowds and created a buzz proving that Oxford is more than Academic. Good luck to them with the debate at the Oxford Union tonight. I'm looking forward to the zenith Friday night, the couture show at the Sheldonian.

Ever start the evening at Summertown Wine Cafe and get an incredible case of the munchies? You head across the street to that tasty little eatery on South Parade for a bit of Italian Pie, only to find it is completely packed with people and your sole option is take out?

Have you ever had one of those days where everything goes right? You arrive at the station running your normal five minutes late and find the fast train is also. You put on a pair of jeans you haven’t worn sense the end of last summer and find £10 in the pocket. You even get a smile and glance from that “way too young for you”, cute, certain someone that has never looked your way before. I had one of those last Saturday.

When I received the Vina Paceta 2004 I expected a typical juicy Rioja with simple, bold flavours. What I got was exceptional. The oak and red fruits integrate and mingle in the mounth, creating a complex, luscious essence. The tannins are soft and chewy, and the length lasts an age, but finishes soft and smooth. This wine resembles a Bordeaux more than a typical Rioja. The only problem is you have to drive to Swindon to purchase it. It's £7.99 at Magnum Wine Shop, Swindon. If any Oxfordshire bodega owners or wine stockists are reading this, please order the Vina Paceta 2004 Crianz. Let me know, I'll be around to pick up a case when it comes in!

What minor media celebrity was spotted on the Cherwell River with his girlfriend this past Saturday? It wouldn't be so bad if the Oxford Mail Guide Editor and Jack FM radio personality hadn't been lounging in the rowboat directing his girlie how to row all the while swigging Lambrini from a bottle.

In a celebration of longer days and spring around the corner, I opened a bottle that had been a gift. The label is attractive, not too fancy and high brow, but comfortable and a bit rugged, like a walk on a country path. It has a deep ruby colour with a lighter slightly purple rim. Black cherries and spice fill the aroma. The flavour coats your mouth creating a complex mingling of dark fruits and coffee grounds. The acid is lighter than the tannins. The latter is noticeable, but subtle. It has a long finish and is excellent with grilled steak, mediterranean vegetables and roasted potatoes. This would be a good wine to open when you have friends over for an outdoor barbecue.

This is the first wine tasting in the UK that I have been to that didn't have a man in either a tweed jacket with elbow patches or a beard searching for his pipe. The crowd was young and fun, a mixture of young couples, young women on a night out and post graduate students who knew a thing or two about whisky. It's a shame Oddbins limits the tickets to 12 - 18, this would be a great party!

At a recent wine tasting I got to try some extraordinary “New World” wines. Granted the cheapest of the bunch was just over £12 topping out with a stunning Shiraz from a true Masters private stock, price unknown. I left the tasting with a mouth full of zest and excitement where every taste bud was doing its job to the maximum and my mouth was tingling.

Ripe, vibrant and complex with a bit of zest and long on the finish...
