Christmas might be over, but the Spirit lives on. Don't fall into the typical paucity of diet and detox after the holidays! January and February are bad enough with out starving yourself of a little libation.

When I got the box of wine at my desk the other week, I thought . . . wow a way to drink wine at work and no one will notice . . . where’s the straw?

This tasty tipple is currently at Tesco for £7.99. Well worth buying a bottle to enjoy outside on a summer evening.

My ideal summer evening, after a hard days work, includes sitting with friends and the pup, enjoying a cool crisp glass of white while watching the shadows lengthen as the sun drops below the horizon. I am always on the lookout for hidden venues in central locations that can provide me with this experience. That is why I was delighted to find the White House Pub on Botley Road in Oxford open again after being closed for the better part of two years. Their claim to “Fine Wine” advertised on the outside of their building lifted my spirits evening more.

I am in a constant search for a good “house” wine. A wine that has the flavour and complexity to keep me interested, but doesn’t cost half my weekly shopping bill want a wine that would go equally well with smoked salmon as frozen quiche and pasta. A wine that is not a party plonk, or a special occasion wine, but one that is just drinkable after a hard day of work. I want all of this ideally £5 a bottle or under. I know this goes against all the wine protocol. Wine Makers, Masters, Vineyards and merchants are all shaking their heads. Critics and journalist are whispering to each other that this blonde just doesn’t get wine. No I do get wine. I also get that people are going to be spending a lot more money getting a mortgage. Between that and healthy, local eating, there aren’t many ways to cut back. In a drastic measure I could recommend that people drink better wine, just less of if. I’m not suggesting that during the week everyone turn to Lambrini or Blue Nunn and on the weekend splash out on the Bordeaux, but maybe just go for 3 bottles of £8, instead of 6 bottles of £3.99.

Oxford Fashion Week held its Lingerie and Swimsuit show last night at Malmaison. Scantilly clad fit young women and men marched up and down a make shift catwalk in the Champagne Bar on the 3rd floor. The well dressed, good looking populace watched, smiling, nodding their head and letting out a few whoops (boys only) when the more risque outfits were on parade. This night seemed even more popular than the one before at Freud's, especially when the models came out to talk to the guests, before putting their street clothes back on. Of course it could have just been the atmosphere and more intimate venue. The producers of the show created a great mood between clubbing and burlesque making everyone think that they were watching something naughty, a bit sinful. This might explain the amount of sweets they had on offer for nibbles. Towers of donuts, plates of cupcakes and what must have been the entire holdings of the restaurants pudding cart were passed around. Being surrounded by the pert models quenched my desire for dessert and had me craving a bit of celery. The aperitif before the show was sparkling with grenadine or kirsch. I liked the bubbles, but again it was a bit sweet for my palate. I would rather had a simple glass of Veuve Cliquot, but I understand the trendiness of the pink potion. Carl Anglim and his team have successfully organized an event that has drawn crowds and created a buzz proving that Oxford is more than Academic. Good luck to them with the debate at the Oxford Union tonight. I'm looking forward to the zenith Friday night, the couture show at the Sheldonian.
