As the memories of the Bournemouth trip fade and old Chuffer is not-so-chuffed as he hasn’t heard from Marilyn yet (see last blog) the reality strikes that the play, The Accrington Pals, is on in a month and lines must be learnt. So I thought I would take this opportunity to remind you, dear reader, the production dates are 27th to 29th November, Kingston Bagpuize with Southmoor Village Hall 7.30pm sharp. Tickets £7 from village shops or telephone 01865 820375 and ask for Betty.

Late on parade this week due to the weekend away I have been rabbiting on about over the last few weeks. The social splinter group of the KBDG ventured to Bournemouth on Friday and had three great nights at the Savoy Hotel, excellent value, food and service if anyone is looking for a hostelry in the area. I gave it three stars in my recently published book on hotels called ‘My Word That Sounds Nice’.

Any body who hasn’t seen the play ‘Noises Off’ by Michael Frayn has missed a real treat. In particular anyone who missed the production staged this week at The Playhouse of the hilarious farce has missed a bigger treat. I have seen the play three or four times but this version surpassed any version I have seen. Maggie Steed as the glorious Mrs Clackett held the whole thing together wonderfully and the presence of Jonathan Coy as the Director and Colin Baker as the aged alcoholic and forgetful Selsdon only added to the enjoyment of this wonderful play.

With rehearsals now in full swing ‘The Accrington Pals’ is shaping up nicely.

The committee meeting last night seemed like a board meeting at ICI with talk of CRB checks and then electrical testing regulations for our lights and apparatus and such. Well in view of the horrendous number of thespians electrocuted every year on stage I can see why all this is so important. I rather think it’s all part of Gordon Brown’s 600,000 pen pushers he’s employed over the last ten years to keep the unemployed numbers down. Is it me?

Things are progressing apace on the group weekend away. The hotel is booked and it’s boiled down to just eight of us going. Ah, remember the halcyon days when 27 intrepid pioneers ventured to Blackpool on our first away trip. Still a great weekend will be assured and the hotel has to be an improvement on the one where we stayed in Dover especially when we found out that it had been voted the worst hotel in the UK on a TV programme the previous year. The whole weekend was such an unbelievable disaster I wrote a play about it for posterity. This snippet will give a flavour of the place and remember it’s true. The names have been changed to protect the guilty, except for George the old actor/manager.
