After finishing Absolute Friends by John le Carre, and being blown away by the grandstand finish, I was desperate to read more of his engrossing spy thrillers.

After covering the Queen's visit to Magdalen College last week, I filed my copy from the local Subway outlet in St Clement's and found myself with a little time on my hands before Her Majesty's visit to the John Radcliffe Hospital I popped into the ramshackle Age Concern shop to check on the stock, and although the Summoned By Bells Betjeman first edition had been sold, there were other treasures on display.

I was disappointed this week that I was unable to make it to the Gloucester Green market, which is always packed with interesting second-hand book stalls, so I shall make it a date next week.

One of my favourite second-hand book shops is Oxfam in St Giles, which next month celebrates its 21st birthday.

I made a flying visit to my home town at the weekend, the cathedral city of Hereford, and while there was no time to ransack the secondhand book shops, I found time to peruse mum and dad's bookshelves. I made some great discoveries.

Enjoyed a brief walkabout at the Gloucester Green Thursday market which featured a succulent hog roast.
