A good idea, sun...........

Posted on 11:41am Sunday 17th May 2009

Another successful production has come and gone. The Memory of Water by Shelagh Stephenson contained moving, intelligent and witty performances from a superb cast, and received fabulous comments from the audiences who came to see it. The audience numbers were a little disappointing but the timing of our usual April slot was changed this year and this may have caught people unawares; the play is also not well-known so maybe we should have done more to let people know what it was about. However, those people who did turn up were well entertained, and gave us great feedback.

Feeling Naughty at Malmaison

Posted on 11:27am Thursday 7th May 2009

Oxford Fashion Week held its Lingerie and Swimsuit show last night at Malmaison. Scantilly clad fit young women and men marched up and down a make shift catwalk in the Champagne Bar on the 3rd floor. The well dressed, good looking populace watched, smiling, nodding their head and letting out a few whoops (boys only) when the more risque outfits were on parade. This night seemed even more popular than the one before at Freud's, especially when the models came out to talk to the guests, before putting their street clothes back on. Of course it could have just been the atmosphere and more intimate venue. The producers of the show created a great mood between clubbing and burlesque making everyone think that they were watching something naughty, a bit sinful. This might explain the amount of sweets they had on offer for nibbles. Towers of donuts, plates of cupcakes and what must have been the entire holdings of the restaurants pudding cart were passed around. Being surrounded by the pert models quenched my desire for dessert and had me craving a bit of celery. The aperitif before the show was sparkling with grenadine or kirsch. I liked the bubbles, but again it was a bit sweet for my palate. I would rather had a simple glass of Veuve Cliquot, but I understand the trendiness of the pink potion. Carl Anglim and his team have successfully organized an event that has drawn crowds and created a buzz proving that Oxford is more than Academic. Good luck to them with the debate at the Oxford Union tonight. I'm looking forward to the zenith Friday night, the couture show at the Sheldonian.

It may sound like an urban myth, but apparently Iceland is able to make use of its free geothermal heat and its long days of summer sun to grow bananas for the Icelandic population.
