I have recently launched a new book group but it is limited to two members - me and my four-week-old daughter.

We meet quite regularly in my kitchen diner in the wee small hours of the morning, and it is during the night-time that I get most of my reading done these days.

Ms Page Turner attends the group in a sling and once I have rocked her to sleep, I crack on with a few chapters.

Recently I have been enjoying The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, which is all about things going bump in the night in a haunted house called Hundreds Hall.

The wailing I get to hear in my house is far from supernatural but if the sleep deprivation goes on much longer I might start seeing things.

Henry Porter's Remembrance Day is another page turner I have enjoyed in the new book group.

I acquired this paperback on the night Ms Page Turner was born.

When I arrived at the John Radcliffe's maternity unit, I was delighted to find Mr Porter's novel on sale to raise funds for the special care baby unit.

I managed to polish off a few chapters before the contractions started in earnest, and after taking the paperback home with me (and the baby) I'm now nearly two thirds of the way through.

Other interesting books that have come my way recently include Landed, a new novel by Tim Pears, a family history by Max Hastings, some short stories by VS Pritchett, and the first instalment of Alan Clark's Diaries.

Now there are two women in the house I thought it might be best if I kept the old misogynist in the car and Clark's diaries now fit snugly in the pocket of my driver's door.

Any reading recommendations for my book group would be greatly appreciated.
