COUNCIL education cabinet member Melinda Tilley stated: “we don’t start taking away school halls and turn them into classrooms” (Oxford Mail, July 23).
This is not a truthful or accurate statement because this is happening now at New Marston Primary School. The school is losing one of its two halls. Classrooms are being built inside the sports hall.
Parents were told that a different build was happening to create one extra classroom for this September, 2012.
There was no public consultation to provide information about proposals to lose the sports hall.
Any objections which people raised (when they knew the details of the phase 3 build) the county council ignored and did not accept their concerns or investigate them.
Phase 3 has also removed the brilliant stage from the assembly hall. Other build design proposals, which included keeping the sports hall were dismissed. All ideas cost under £2m.
Children desperately need the indoor space which the sports hall has provided.
School children numbers are doubling to 420 in 2015.
There are conflict of interests with School Govenors. Ofsted and Local Government Ombudsman cannot intervene.
The Department of Education is aware, but slow to investigate.
The phase 3 has left the school, in a deprived area of Oxford, lacking in necessary facilities. Young children need to access sports and exercise for their health and well-being. They are our future.
