Technology has answer to speeding

10:00am Friday 30th July 2010

IT IS time we moved forward from speed cameras.

They are old technology which has failed to stop the determined speedsters. No flash will prevent an accident nor deter high speeds.

Speeding up to, slowing down, and speeding away from speed cameras is a familiar sight on the roads these days.

Who hasn’t seen this, or had to brake suddenly when a driver in front, realising that there is a camera ahead (or even behind) has braked to a low speed?

Average-speed cameras are a far more effective way to keep speeds within the limits.

Nuneham Courtney, which plans to adopt its own camera would better spend its resources on three average speed cameras along its main street, than one regular speed camera – which would only catch a flash of speed.

It is average speed that matters, not flashes.

Soon the warning and navigating devices that allow people to detect, and thus avoid, speed cameras will enable the automatic detection of speeding of the vehicles in which those devices are installed. The result: no more speeding.
