I HAVE been following with interest the debate in the Oxford Mail on the decision to withdraw funding for speed cameras, and found the debates on whether they were life-savers or a stealth tax, interesting and varied.
On this occasion I decided to consult with my seven-year-old grandson, as his elder brother tends to crow a bit over him when I keep asking him for solutions to problems.
The answer according to him was ‘why not switch all the cameras off but not tell anyone, so people will keep slowing down when they see them. And then they won’t have to pay to put new film in either?’ This would appear to be good thinking and I am sure that villagers in Nuneham Courtney would be glad to give their camera a wash down once a week for free to make it look as if it is regularly in use.
Hopefully, although a little late in view of the publicity given to the decision reached, a new story can be issued to counteract it.
After all we have become used to being fed disinformation by governing bodies in the past year While trying to help cut costs, and not wishing to land the people making the decision with consultancy fees, I am fairly sure that a signed photograph of Brad Friedel, the Aston Villa goalkeeper, would suffice on this occasion.
Not to be outdone, the eight-year-old has already suggested a scheme, which would appear to help the police and council cut down on accidents and promote better road use. But I am going to hold on to that one to see if the solution supplied in this letter produces any form of reward (photo of Brad, signed to ‘Luke’) CHRIS PAYNE, Turnpike Road, Bicester
