Cyclists need their own lanes

IF POLICE in Oxford have warned 112 cyclists since October for using pavements, did they stop to ask why?

In a genuine cycling city like Copenhagen, this situation would never happen.

Cyclists need their own safe bike lanes on all roads and marked routes across junctions, plus rights in law giving protection and priority.

Only then will pedestrians, cyclists and motorists all be able to get from A to B without competing for space.

To find, for example, an Oxford bus stop in a bike lane instead of to the right is shocking. Provision for cyclists in Oxford could be so much better. Laura Townsend, Beech Road, Chinnor

What utter c r a p. If cyclists learnt the highway code would be a start. They also need to understand what Red at traffic lights mean, one way streets, not to undertake on the inside when the vechicle in front is indicating to turn left, have lights at night time. Bus stop in cycle lane, shocking!!! Oh yes lets put the bus stops in the middle of the road, hold up traffic and passengers can get run over by thick cyclists, maybe they could run over a baby in a pushchair or a wheelchair user getting on the bus. The only thing cyclists need is common sense, fat chance of that happening.

I cycle everywhere in Oxford.
I walk through Queen Street and Cornmarket when lawfully required.
I always have lights and even spare batteries.
I love cycling but I despise my fellow Oxford cyclists.
I see them get away with all the laws I comply with.
I see them cycle on the wrong side of the road in the wrong direction, they cycle over zebra crossings despite the fact someone is trying to cross the road.
They cycle three abreast down the High Street and through traffic lights galore and never have lights when they should.

BartSimpson is so right about, not to undertake on the inside when a vehicle in front is indicating to turn left, I see this happen most every day.
Yes I agree also most Oxford cyclists are thick.
Finally I’m the criminal who is cycling through Queen Street at 9.45am (before the 10 am deadline) and being told by a community police officer that quote “ You are lucky by ten minutes” Lest I be served a fine of £30.

rep-tile, if the police said that to you, then that's not nice of them to make assumptions like that. I hope you told them that the reason you were on your bike was because you had a whole 10 minutes before the ban started, and if it were after 10am, you'd be on foot!

No wonder people are rapidly losing respect for the police - always targeting the wrong people yet let repeat offenders with a sob story get away with it.
