IVF comments were cruel

IN REFERENCE to your story on 24-year-old Clare Cousins who has been refused IVF on the NHS (OxfordMail, July 2), I felt I must write to say how disgusted I was at ‘Lady Penelope’s’ comments about “nature I’m afraid”.

I was denied treatment on the NHS for a long-term condition requiring chiropractic to be able to live a normal and pain-free life.

I, too, get annoyed with the NHS lottery as my treatment is offered elsewhere on the NHS.

But Lady Penelope’s comments were cruel, crass and very disparaging.

I too lived with infertility, unable to afford IVF and well know and understand the pain Clare is going through.

I understand the lack of NHS funding (too many managers, not enough cash) but adoption is not as easy as Penelope thinks.

However, it was even harder when I and my first husband were refused – we never knew why, nor did our social worker, health visitor or GP.

Surrogacy is another option, but to hold your own child has to be the most wonderful of all experiences – I hope Lady Penelope never suffers infertility if she ever wants children, that is.

She should apologise to Clare immediately.

Infertility is hell – we went to hell and back to try and conceive. My heart goes out to Clare. I hope some day she does achieve her dream of motherhood and has a baby. I’m used to it at 61, but the feelings don’t go away.

Clare Cousins situation may well feel sad BUT the harsh reality is.. isn't life threatening!
IVF is very costly and provides unreliable "results".Money in the current cash starved NHS could be better spent in MANY other area's eg:all acute services, elderly care, stroke rehab, mental health, etc, etc.
Think reader... how would YOU like your NHS contribution to be spent???

Maybe if we stopped sending all of our money abroad to buy 3rd world dictators a new palace or fleet of mercs, we may have enough to fund a fully inclusive NHS. But until then, may I suggest Dot, that you and your fellow sufferers go to MR BROWN, and ask why MR MUGABE ET-AL can have a life of luxury on our money. Whilst you suffer, there is the problem

I totally agree with the cruel harsh comments. They were bang out of order. I do agree that not being able to concieve is not life threatening,NHS funding for IVF has been around for years,They are hoping to lower the age bracket because it is more successful in younger women, if the NHS stopped funding IVF do you think the money would be spent elsewhere?? i doubt it, it would just get swallowed up in the "system" somewhere. I am funding my own treatment and will continue to do so for as long as i have to, I am not a selfish person and if i do become eligable for funded treatment i will take the opportunity, if i was asked to forgo my treatment to help someone with a life threatening illness who needed medication i would not hesitate in doing so. Having a baby means everything to me and my husband and we will do everything in our power to achieve our dream.
