MARTIN Russell (Letters, November 2) misquotes my previous letter. I was not questioning whether Brexit would happen, but was drawing attention to the incompetent farce of the Government’s attempts at negotiation.

Mr Russell states that the British people voted for Brexit by a 3.8 per cent majority. So they did. I accept that.

Since then, however, we have had a General Election, called specifically by Theresa May, seeking an increased majority to enable her to force through a hard Brexit against parliamentary resistance. The British people responded by taking away her majority altogether.

Leavers are fond of demanding that remainers accept the result of the referendum. In the same way, leavers must themselves accept the result of the General Election.

The British people have rejected a hard Brexit. In continuing their attempts to bring about a ‘no deal’ Brexit, it is leavers themselves who are now seeking to frustrate the will of the British people.
