OXFORD for Europe is a group of local residents who are concerned about Brexit and its consequences for our city. To help people understand where our MPs will stand on this vital issue, we have organised Brexit hustings for both Oxford East and Oxford West and Abingdon, working with the European Movement and the Oxford European Association.

We are delighted that candidates from the Liberal Democrats, Labour, Green and UKIP as well as one Independent speedily accepted our invitation to explain their positions. To our regret however, neither Conservative candidate has found it possible to attend these Hustings in person. Nicola Blackwood and Suzanne Bartington have stressed that they want to make a success of Brexit. We are disappointed that they have not accepted this opportunity to explain how they would achieve this.

No other issue is liable to affect Oxford more seriously. Our car industry and universities have crucial links to the EU: citizens need answers about their future after Brexit.

Concerns have been raised during this General Election about the willingness of Government figures to engage directly with the general public. We hope Suzanne Bartington and Nicola Blackwood can review their commitments and find a way to join us along with the candidates from other parties. We will keep a chair available for them.

Hustings for Oxford East are tonight, 7-9pm, at Cowley Road Methodist Centre. Hustings for Oxford West and Abingdon are on May 24, 7-9pm, at Exeter Hall in Kidlington. All are welcome.
