GLYN Limmer’s posturing (May 5) against Emmanuel Macron and the EU combines woeful historical ignorance with delusional xenophobia.

Yes, over three centuries Britain influenced the course of European history by building alliances that created a Balance of Power more or less preventing France and, latterly, Germany from dominating Europe. Admittedly the main purpose of this was to safeguard ‘Britain’s’ interests.

But this was not in the spirit of “teaching the Europeans a lesson” as Mr Limmer fantasises! There were many setbacks and defeats on the way: remember Churchill’s Norwegian invasion fiasco and the ignominious Surrender of Tobruk, if not humiliation at Almanza in 1707?

As for the decisive victories at Blenheim, Waterloo and D-Day, these were vast, collective efforts involving many countries’ soldiers and commanders.

Moreover, against Germany, Britain emerged enfeebled from its “victories”.

None of this is understood by those reckless gamblers currently in government who have the cheek to claim that they represent “strong and stable” government.

It takes insane arrogance to think that Britain has “history on its side” when confronting France, Germany and 25 others at the negotiating table.

Those masterminds of yesteryear – Marlborough, the Pitts, Lloyd George, Churchill – would be apoplectic at Britain’s isolation.
Make no mistake, fellow citizens: this disaster in the making is going to cost us all dear.

The difference is that the real villains – Cameron, Osborne, Farage, May, Johnson and their pals in high places – are already planning get-outs and, if needs be, bolt-holes abroad when truth dawns.
