WE HAVE now arrived at the latest political moves by the Oxfordshire county and district councils who are engaging consultants to determine whether one unitary authority would bring about savings on council tax.

Who is kidding whom? It is all pretence.

The council taxpayer will end up paying for the lot where each report will raise issues whereby cuts can be made in the neighbouring councils and few, if any, in their own.

Who will decide? Will it be the council taxpayers or will there be a marathon inquiry – costing thousands of pounds – to be judged by a Government-appointed inspector.

We all know the answer; it will end up costing 10 times more than the savings that will be projected by the various consultants.

What would the council taxpayer get? Some glossy reports to be housed in their council chambers gathering dust?
