AS REFUGEES during the Japanese invasion of Burma in 1942, my siblings and I at the age of nine, eight and five were saved by the wisdom, ingenuity and tenacity of our parents, also by army and medical personnel, and individuals operating ships, railways and aircraft.

This miracle of humanitarian assistance was extended to so many of our compatriots and associates and included a country prepared to accommodate us.

I find it hard to understand why our Government has recently decided that, after all, this nation can accommodate only about 300 orphaned children from abroad in these terrible times for them. What will happen to the many left behind?

Are we such a heartless and feckless nation that we can go along with what our Government has decided in this matter?
