ANDREW Ffrench reports (Oxford Mail, February 10) that Balliol College has objected to 'Burgerfest', because the privileged students of Oxford University require peace and quiet.

Burgerfest takes place in May, celebrating Oxford's 70-year link with its German twin city of Bonn with three days of stalls and street entertainment on Broad Street.

It is galling that these colleges only consider their needs.
We the residents of Oxford regularly tolerate with good grace, Oxford students' alcohol-charged frivolity and 'high-spirited' behaviour. Our council tax is spent every May Day protecting these students from jumping off Magdalen Bridge and possibly injuring themselves during their very noisy and colourful May Day celebrations: thousands are spent by the council clearing away the students' discarded Champagne bottles. Student housing requirements blight community cohesion and increases housing costs for Oxford's working poor.

Noise complaints from colleges has already banished the highly successful Love Oxford from Broad Street and now these colleges want to banish Burgerfest. The city council must not yield to the unreasonable demands and might of Oxford colleges.
