I am very proud that Oxford and Oxfordshire voted so overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union.

Oxford City with a 70 per cent vote to Remain can hold its head up high. But not enough people in the rest of Britain agreed with us. This is a deeply sad time not just for the United Kingdom but for the rest of Europe too.

It is shameful that this country has turned its back on our sisters and brothers in the rest of the European Union. It is now clear that the Conservative promise of a European referendum was a huge and damaging mistake.

Oxford is an international city which benefits hugely from hard-working tax-paying migrants. Our city must continue to sell cars to and welcome students and tourists from the rest of Europe and around the world.

We must not allow the dream to fade of a united, democratic and prosperous Europe, with Britain at its heart. The Tories with their Brexit Referendum have created a deeply divided country and blighted a generation.

Let’s make sure Oxford redoubles its efforts for ever closer links with the rest of Europe, including our twin cities of Bonn, Leiden and Grenoble. Oxford at least remains European.
