STEVE Chandler (Oxford Mail, May 2) assures us that he does not consider himself hard done by with regard to the Brexit campaign.

That is good news.

Nevertheless it is the case that, whenever anyone of any stature seeks to express a view disagreeing with Brexit, there is a voluble outcry from the Brexit campaign complaining about the supposed unfairness of that intervention. That is why I say that the Brexit campaign considers itself hard done by.

The strong impression given by many Brexit supporters is that they consider themselves to be the only people entitled to speak in the debate.
Mr Chandler berates me for not expressing a view about how the campaign leaflets were financed. I do at least know how the Government leaflet was financed, even if, in part, it was paid for out of my own pocket. The financing of the Brexit campaign is less evident.

It is reported that the Brexit campaign has received substantial funding from wealthy individuals, who tend to remain in the background whilst others campaign on their behalf. In consequence we know little about their views other than that they support Brexit. They may or may not hold the views attributed to them by Mr Chandler. However, given their tendency to remain in the background, it seems to me that the motivation of their desire for Brexit remains obscure.
