SO DAVID Cameron believes that all these children’s centres should stay open. So why is the Government giving less and less of the taxpayers’ money to local authorities?

I don’t understand why the Government needs to spend £100bn on Trident when we already have an arsenal of nuclear weapons. Are those that we already have passed their use-by date?

I do agree that we need to have a deterrent while other countries have nuclear weapons, but to spend all that money on new ones is scandalous when the people of this country are having to keep tightening their belts.

Then there is all that money to be spent on HS2, another £50bn if and when it gets built. Not to mention the billions of pounds this country pays to Brussels and to overseas aid each year.

I was reading Cllr John Tanner’s letter (September 23), where he says charity begins at home but it wasn’t said in the context as to what it means. It’s a very sad world we live in with such hostilities that such a huge amount of people have to flee their countries.

Could Mr Cameron put his or rather our money where his mouth is. In a letter earlier this week it stated that the divide between the rich and the poor is becoming greater, and it is true. The Government has announced a better deal in inheritance tax which will favour the most well-off in this country – but please not at the expense of children’s services.

A spokesman for the county council says that it’s necessary to make savings by closing children’s centres to protect care for the elderly. We should have all our welfare and social services protected and at the same time we are asked to accommodate tens of thousands of refugees.

Where will they live, how will they be supported? I’m not saying that we shouldn’t take in these poor people but for heaven’s sake, will the Government make it more affordable for local authorities to balance the books?
