I AGREE with Mary Clarkson (September 1) that traffic lights might be one of the answers to the problems at the Cherwell Drive junction.

Traffic lights have been used to regulate the flow of vehicles at the roundabouts at some major roads, so why not here.

Another way that might make a slight difference would be to find somewhere for the residents of lower Headley Way to park off the road, but finding a suitable piece of land might prove difficult.

However, if a second entrance to the JR could be built, preferably on to the A40, that could be a great improvement.

The basic problem is that there are too many cars on the road and Headington suffers more than most places, partly because the main road to and from London passes through it, but also because of excessive building in the area.

I think that the new estate west of Barton is a serious mistake since traffic can only feed onto the Green Road Roundabout.

To suggest that some vehicles could leave this estate via Northway is a total no no because this would further aggravate the Headley Way problem and bring more misery to Marston.

As John Tanner says in the same paper, all this burning of fossil fuel is ruining the planet.

You cannot keep adding more vehicles to already congested roads and building more roads is not the answer.

For the majority of people a car is not really a necessity – some think it’s a must have – but in the end the buck to overcome this problem falls on central government.

Perhaps they could make a steep rise in road tax or VAT on the sale of cars, but whatever means is chosen, something has to be done.
