I AM writing about the loss of WG Powell’s and the comment that it “serves the wider public interest”.

Tell that to all the carpenters and builders for all the Oxford University colleges who have relied on this extraordinary company for an unparalleled service and choice .

W G Powell’s have supplied to me personally over 30 years of unfailing service and quality.

Powell’s also provided a vast specialised machining service from one-offs to non-standard joinery.

It has also provided highly complex reproduction joinery for me personally for English Heritage, Kew Gardens, Rothschild estates, the Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera.

They’ve all required what Powell’s could supply.

The loss of W G Powell’s is another step towards the decline in detailed joinery.

Where will we all go to repair our Victorian/Georgian and ancient buildings?

It’s another resource that market forces lay waste to and disregard the consequences.

The construction industry, all the colleges and individuals who rely on this company will soon realise what we have lost.
