A lamentable failure to settle JR porters’ dispute LIKE Roger Wallace (Oxford Mail, August 17 ) I too am wondering what is happening with the John Radcliffe Hospital porters in their dispute with the sub-contractor Carillion because of their proposals to cut wages, jobs, and worsen porters’ terms and conditions of employment.

Feedback from the porters suggests that negotiations conducted by a Unison full time national officer have made little progress, not surprising as the shop stewards who represent the porters are still suspended by Carillion.

Today's Letters

The situation is not helped as the Unison convenor is also suspended from the JR site and therefore cannot represent those in dispute.

As a result, a Unison national officer who reportedly has little or no experience of portering issues has been sent to negotiate on behalf of the people who do the job.

If this is the case is it any wonder that the porters are threatening to leave the union, a course not to be recommended.

It would appear there is a lamentable failure by all concerned to deal with the right to be represented in the workplace by the elected stewards, and deal with the porters’ problems.
