TIM OATES is absolutely right to complain about the unfair results of the recent General Election.

I was on holiday in Spain from May 8 to 18 and on my return was horrified to discover that nearly four million Ukip voters had only one MP, whereas some two million Scottish Nationalists have 56.

It is grossly unfair that there are now only eight sitting Liberal Democrat MPs.

In my view an assembly such as the House of Commons is not democratic if its political make-up does not accurately reflect the views of those who voted.

The answer, of course, is proportional representation. Much the best system in the Single Transferable Vote, in which people mark the candidates 1,2,3,4 etc.

Voters can choose between candidates of the same party.

Each city or county would have three or four or five MPs, thus avoiding petty disputes about constituency boundaries.

Nearly every voter would find that one of the MPs would be someone they support.

I shall definitely be dead before we have democracy in England. I look forward to the next life.
