I am very relieved Morrisons has shelved its proposed supermarket on the Hithercroft Estate.

South Oxfordshire District Council’s granting of planning permission for this was an inept piece of town planning. The building of out-of-town supermarkets up and down the UK, while giving people cheaper groceries, has gutted town after town. Until SODC’s bad decision, Wallingford had escaped this fate. Now, thankfully, we have a reprieve. If, eventually it is built, I predict our town centre will go into a serious decline.

The solution, surely, is to get some competition for Waitrose into its old premises.
