Russia is our enemy, so says John Tanner: “Nuclear missiles are no use against Russia, which has many more than Britain”.

That statement basically says we are no good as an allied nation in the event of a nuclear attack. That is, of course, if we go to war with Russia. True, it won’t stop terrorism and, to be honest, I don’t think stopping terrorism would be an easy task as history shows.

But to do away with nukes and save money and give more for investment in overseas aid? Do me a favour. We give enough as it is. More for hospitals, and so on, is fine. Our conventional armed forces do need upgrading but what use would they be against the might of Russia and its nukes. Because John Tanner says Russia has more than us.

So Oxford East MP Andrew Smith is against Trident. Has he forgotten with these weapons there has been peace.

Just a reminder of the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. Kennedy’s blockade of Khrushchev’s plans to have nukes in Cuba... a threat that Khrushchev took seriously and thus ended a possible nuclear holocaust. It’s hard to imagine if the Americans didn’t have nukes.
