I was pleased to see the article entitled Dog’s Sentimental Search on the Remember When page (April 13).
In the 1970s I was a Special Constable with Thames Valley Police.
Pc 1820 Tony Blunt became my mentor as he lived nearby in Headington. He often visited my mother and I at our house and would leave police dog Sam in our front garden while he came inside for a cuppa.
Sam would be told to sit. He was never tethered.
When Tony had finished his tea he’d return to the dog who would not have moved, even though the gate was open.
Funny coincidence, on the days Tony and Sam visited we never seemed to get mail delivered.
When Tony retired from the police he became the chief trainer for Hearing Dogs for the Deaf at Lewknor. Unfortunately I lost contact with him after his retirement. I often wondered how he fared in civvy street.
