YOUR relentless correspondent Councillor John Tanner has really excelled himself in contradiction.
He writes that the EDL demonstration “should not be allowed... in a tolerant and international city like Oxford”.
Tolerant? Not allowed? Where’s the tolerance in prohibiting a demonstration?
Certainly in view of the extremism of the EDL and the so-called anti-fascists, it was necessary to keep the two groups apart two Saturdays ago.
This could have been done by some 20 policemen blocking the west end of Bonn Square. I am amazed to hear that there were 500 policemen, some from as far away as Kent!
How much did this cost Oxfordshire taxpayers? I would like to know.
I hope the new Chief Constable or Police and Crime Commissioner Anthony Stansfeld will inform your readers without delay.
