ALARIC Rose (Oxford Mail, March 20) can quote all the statistics he likes, but he cannot conceal the fact that voters are leaving the Liberal Democrats in droves.

Five years ago, Nicola Blackwood beat the Liberal Democrats by a handful of votes. Now, even on Cllr Rose’s own statistics, the Liberal Democrats trail by eight per cent.

Meanwhile the Labour vote has increased significantly.

The reason is not hard to find. Five years ago, many potential Labour voters were persuaded to vote tactically for the Liberal Democrats in order to keep the Tories out.

What happened in practice is that the Liberal Democrats have propped up the Tories and kept them in office. In effect the Liberal Democrats have become the “Tory lite” party.

Today’s letters

As a result, many of those voters have left the Liberal Democrats and returned to Labour. Many more are likely to do so by the time we reach polling day.
