Having heard and read comments from most parties who’re soon to do battle in May’s elections regarding all matter of subjects like roads, rail, parking, housing and the like, it would appear, to me at least, that the common thread seems to be that of personal opinions.

What I mean is, a number of our city or county councillors or politicians seem to be flying the flag for their own preferences or beliefs, rather than that of the majority of the voters who actually elected them.

Too many seem to have bright ideas or agendas of their own when entering committee rooms or council chambers.

That is not the idea of the exercise really is it?

Today’s letters

Perhaps now is a good time to remind these good people, (which is what they are despite the stick I regularly give them) that it may be the case of fighting for a case or cause they don’t totally agree with, as it has been asked of them by their local voters.

Joe Public can’t attend for themselves, so it follows that elected members speak and act on their behalf, even if the cause is contrary to their own individual wishes.

I would of course encourage everyone to take advantage of their vote on the day, and I’d further encourage all those who’re then elected to actually go on to serve and enforce the interests and will of the people first, rather than as now appears, for themselves or their party through some kind of misplaced loyalty.
