The Oxford Mail (January 6) shows the Liberal Democrat councillors for Wolvercote and Summertown, namely Andrew Gant and Jean Fooks, posturing outside No 376 Banbury Road, Oxford and suggesting that another pedestrian crossing should be placed at that location to improve safety. Mr Gant quotes “that there is a stretch of that road between South Parade and the Cutteslowe roundabout where there is no crossing”.

Mr Gant should be reminded of his lack of local knowledge of the area that he represents as a councillor, as a traffic light-operated crossing is in place on the Banbury Road junction of Upland Park Road, plus central dividing bollards at the junctions of Wentworth Road and Squitchey Lane junctions which already assists pedestrians.

I would venture to suggest that the wealthy d’Overbroeck’s College intending to occupy both 376 and 333 Banbury Road should pay for an underground tunnel (similar to that of the St Edward’s School tunnel under the Woodstock Road) to facilitate their students rather than another above ground pedestrian crossing which will again slow down the Banbury Road traffic. d’Overbroeck’s College, formerly based near Park Town, has seemingly expanded its base at 111, and 113 Banbury Road with another property on the east side of Banbury Road.

I wonder whether the Banbury Road/Linton junction pedestrian crossing was introduced in the same way that they are now trying to clobber the Banbury Road motorists again further up North Oxford.

Today’s letters

Oxfordshire County Council planning committee take heed and make this college build an adjoining tunnel rather than allow an eleventh set of traffic signals between St Giles and Cutteslowe Roundabout.
