Are the authorities ever going to seriously tackle the appalling standard of cycling in Oxford?
I’m not talking about the Police spending one afternoon per year on Magdalen Bridge telling cyclists off, but proper enforcement and punishments such as substantial fines and confiscation of bikes.
Far too many cyclists ignore red lights, don’t have lights on their bikes when dark, wear headphones or earpieces so they can’t hear, ride through pedestrianised areas, and overload themselves with shopping bags. They are a danger to themselves and to others, and I’m amazed there aren’t more serious accidents than there are. Offending cyclists need to be punished, “educating” them doesn’t work. But I won’t hold my breath. After all, many of them are students, and we can’t upset the universities can we?
