For years we have read of the perils of cycling in Oxford and of course of the congestion causing problems to motorists. However, spare a thought here for the pedestrian who has none of the trappings of a cycle or car.

I recently moved to New Marston and catch a bus 15 minutes walk away.

During that short walk I am constantly preyed upon by cyclists going at breakneck speed – either straight at me or almost knocking me off the pavement or on my heels. None of these pavements have cycle paths and none of these cyclists seem to have any intention of going onto the road. The corners are the worst point where if there was a cyclist coming, I would be knocked down for sure.

I am not young and I find what should be a simple walk fraught with danger from cyclists both young and old. Do none of these people care about the pedestrian?

My mother was knocked down by a cyclist. She was almost 80 years old. She broke her arm in three places and never properly regained use of it. I also witnessed two elderly ladies knocked down by a cyclist once again going at a furious speed – turning the corner – once again on the pavement. None of these cyclists seem to care. It’s time for the police to step in and enforce the law here to protect the pedestrian. If you don’t like cycling on the roads then take your life in your hands like me and be a pedestrian. You will soon understand what I mean.
