I was not at all surprised to discover that Morrisons M Local Mini Mart in Central Headington is to close.
This was the first of the ‘convenience stores’ to appear in Headington a year or so ago followed quickly by Sainsbury’s Local, then Tesco Express, all located near to each other.

Waitrose, who already have a large supermarket here, have now also put a shop within the nearby Petrol Station and with the additional shops of the Co-op and Iceland, it is no wonder that we are now seeing some of them starting to disappear.
Why so many were allowed to move in to this small shopping area is beyond belief. Perhaps these convenience stores and other shops selling the same types of products will eventually disappear and Headington will get some of the independent traders that many of us knew and miss, such as clothes shops, shoe shops and a wool shop for example. I am very surprised also that one of the major mobile phone companies haven’t muscled their way in.
