On Monday evening I learned about the latest proposal by the Save Temple Cowley Pools group for leasing the facilities, saving them from destruction and replacement by housing. The city council will consider this and other proposals at 5.30pm on December 10. Some reasons to hope that this plan wins out: 1. The pools and gym are much used and conveniently located. They are within walking distance for many people, unlike the replacement pool in Blackbird Leys, which would have to be accessed by bus or car by the majority.

It would usually mean two buses, which is not cheap, and not convenient with a buggy or small children, whereas walking is enjoyable. I live in Garsington and the Temple Cowley pool is on the bus route into the city.

There is no bus connection between Garsington and Blackbird Leys.

2. The site in question includes the car park for the library. What does this say about intentions for the future of the library? The leasing arrangement would preserve the library car park.

3. Contrary to what the city council have said, the pool is efficient with regard to carbon emissions and could be more so if the pool had a cover, which is included in the leasing plan.

4. Regular exercise is gaining more and more importance as the obesity epidemic takes hold.

5. Why should residents lose an amenity which they value? Whose interests trump those of the local community, in the city council’s eyes? I think they should tell us.
