Once again as Christmas approaches the subject of drink- driving is raised again.

People will be arrested, lose their licence and jobs, families will lose loved ones, and overpaid barristers will look for loopholes. Famous people will be acquitted “as they need their licence for charity work”.

Over the years people have been acquitted because the officer did not have his cap on or the officer asked “when did you last have a drink?” They should have asked “when did you last consume alcohol?”

In the days of trial by jury, many got off as the jurors would say “but for the grace of God it could have been me”.

Today’s letters

The answer is a zero limit. Hence no argument.

Breach of human rights, the dogooding civil liberty folk will scream.

As a police officer for 35 years, I have seen the carnage that resulted.

People often go out for a drink in a group so nominate a driver and take it in turns to drive.

Don’t forget the next day you can still be over the limit, so take a taxi or a bus to work. A fine and loss of licence is no punishment. No insurance, car tax, MOT certificate or petrol to pay for. In some countries it is an offence to have an opened bottle of alcohol in your car. If you do the car is seized.

Is the answer really so hard? Not don’t drink and drive, just don’t.

People whose job depends on driving are the most sensible. Is that extra “one for the road worth it?”
