I’ve just read the article on poor broadband provision in North Oxford, Superfast broadband plan ‘at a crawl’ in north Oxford, November 13.
They are not alone. I live just off the Iffley Road and have the misfortune to be connected to the only cabinet that has not been upgraded to fibre optic. My broadband speed is around 5Mbps – on a good day. This prohibits just about everything beyond standard internet access.
There is no scope to move as other providers also use BT Openreach facilities. Despite this poor service BT charges me more than my son, seven minutes walk away, who does have superfast broadband. Oxford East MP Andrew Smith has been chasing this on our behalf but so far, after two years, there has been no progress, either with the council via the funds they have available, or with Openreach who claim ‘cost’ as the relevant factor. It’s amazing that a city like Oxford, with all its academic, business, cultural and historical associations, should be subject such poor provision.
