Some weeks ago, I wrote to suggest that if any supporters of Doric’s proposals for the West Way development felt under-represented they should write to you. At last now I read two letters (Rev Kalyan Das and A Woodward) not only in support of these proposals but also making serious allegations of “bullying” tactics and (in Rev Das’s) case of misrepresentation by those opposed to Doric’s plans.

I am a long-time resident of Botley and I see no bullies. I see ordinary people from all walks of life and political allegiances appalled by the proposed development. I see those with elderly relatives in Field House who stand to be displaced; those whose Church will be overshadowed; those whose businesses will be overwhelmed; those who use and depend upon these businesses; those whose already difficult journeys will be rendered longer by the increased traffic; those who have written in so frequently to your newspaper to plead that this is an over-sized development entirely out of keeping with local needs. These people are not bullies: they welcome appropriate and sympathetic development attuned to the real needs of the community rather than to the balance sheet of a company which is out to exploit the area for commercial profit and a controlling group on the Vale of White Horse Council who seem unwilling or incapable of denying them free rein to trample upon our area.

Today’s letters

The real bullies lurk elsewhere. As a teacher, I am well aware of the tactic used by playground bullies to represent themselves as victims. It is an unappealing and usually unsuccessful tactic.

Still, if the worst comes to the worst and Doric’s plans come to fruition, at least A Woodward will be insulated from the mess in the rural retreat of Tubney and Rev Kalyan Dyas will have the joy of a new Church building.
