Cabinet member for transport Cllr David Nimmo-Smith was quoted in your paper (October 27) as saying that he didn’t see how building on Green Belt land outside of Oxford would help, because “How are people going to cycle from Grenoble Road?”

Such ignorance might explain why the county gives such low priority to investment in cycling infrastructure.

I’m 61-years-old, not particularly fit, but prefer to get around by bike. Grenoble Road to Carfax is 4.8 miles of reasonably pleasant cycling (avoiding Cowley and Iffley roads). Mr Nimmo-Smith should allow about 25 minutes door to door – depending on the time of day, much quicker than any other form of transport except motorbike. If he preferred, he could take the quiet, pretty route along the river (200 yards and maybe five minutes longer).

Cllr Dick Wolff, City Councillor for St Marys, Green Party spokesperson on cycling
