It is unfortunate that developments to encourage cycling in Oxford tend to discourage the equally commendable practice of walking.

Oxford Mail:

From left, Cyclox chairman Simon Hunt, Green Party parliamentary candidate Ann Duncan and Oxford City Council leader Bob Price test out the resurfaced route through Hinksey Park in South Oxford

Resurfacing the path through Hinksey Park now makes it possible to cycle three abreast, as demonstrated by a formidable trio consisting of the chairman of Cyclox, the leaders of the City Council and the Green Party parliamentary candidate, ready to confront any hapless walkers (October 2).

The executive board member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford, supports similar treatment to make this possible in other parks (October 6).

These concessions to cyclists follow resurfacing part of the towpath to encourage use by cyclists.

Today’s letters

Permitting cycling on parts of some pavements has become cycling on all parts of all pavements.

Earlier in the year, one of our national papers (The Times, January 27), in commenting on official figures showing that cyclists were almost as likely to cause accidents to pedestrians as drivers, used the heading “Cyclists create army of walking wounded”.

As one who has commuted by bicycle in several towns for many years, I have noticed the poor general standard of cycling as Oxford as judged by the Highway Code.
